Wood Craft and Upcycling

Description

This practical, workshop based course specialises in the making of wooden household items for the craft industry. Projects include the making of furniture, along with smaller items such as bowls, utensils, lamps, wood carvings, decorative items etc.

Students are thought the practice of fine woodworking skills using specialised hand tools, along with the use of power tools and machinery.

The course also focuses on the sustainable practice of green woodworking and furniture upcycling, bringing new life to otherwise unwanted pieces of furniture.

A selection of introductory group projects is completed in term 1. In terms 2 and 3, students are encouraged to design and make unique projects under the guidance and assistance of their tutors.

The course is delivered in a very enjoyable and inclusive environment. All levels of experience are welcome.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:

• Leaving Certificate (LC Established, LCVP or LCA) or equivalent.

• For mature applicants appropriate experience will be considered in lieu of formal qualifications

• All applicants will be required to attend an interview

DURATION:

This is a one-year course but students on successful completion of year one may progress to Furniture Design & Making 2

CERTIFICATION:

• QQI Level 5 Certification in Creative Craft (5M1981).

COURSE CONTENT:

The following subjects may be offered:

Furniture Making 5N1275

Using traditional woodworking hand tools and power tools to accurately achieve a professional standard. You will also learn how to use woodworking machinery to process rough timber, making it ready for joining and shaping at the bench. Colouring and finishing by hand or in the spray booth will also be part of your skillset.

WORK PLACEMENT / EXPERIENCE:

Participants will be required to undertake 10 days of work placement in a relevant location. The college will assist participants in identifying suitable placements.
