Six former students have won National PPI Radio Awards from this highly renowned course. The emergence of digital radio and podcasting has made learning about radio production more relevant than ever before.
Students gain hands-on experience in a radio industry setting and will learn the basics of producing an original, creative podcast. Learn how to communicate and successfully market a podcast towards a mass audience. Students form part of the management structure for Juice Corks, FM, mobile and online radio output.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:
• Leaving Certificate, LCA or QQI level 4 qualification.
• For mature applicants appropriate experience will be considered in lieu of formal qualifications.
• All applicants will be interviewed.
DURATION:
This is a one-year course with an option for students to progress to Radio and Podcasting 2.
CERTIFICATION:
• QQI Level 5 in Radio Production (5M4511).

The purpose of this subject is to equip the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence to produce radio programmes and other radio broadcast materials to a standard suitable for a range of services at local, regional and national level.

WORK PLACEMENT / EXPERIENCE:
Students will be required to undertake 60 Hours work experience at the Juice FM Cork on site radio broadcasting studio.
EDUCATION PROGRESSION OPPORTUNITIES:
Excellent progressions opportunities including:
• Students who successfully complete QQI Level 5 Radio Production may apply for QQI level 6 in Media Production (Tramore Road Campus, Radio an Podcasting Year 2).
• Students who successfully complete QQI Level 5 Radio Production with a minimum of 3 Distinctions may apply for 2nd year entry to B.A. Hons in TV, Radio and New Media Broadcasting, (TL802), MTU, Tralee.
• Students with a QQI level 5 distinction profile may be eligible to apply to higher education courses through the Higher Education Link Scheme, e.g. B.A. degree, U.C.C.
• Third Level courses in Ireland and abroad e.g., UCC, MTU.
• Coláiste Dhulaigh Dublin: B.A. (Hons) Top Up part time one-year Higher Education in Broadcasting & Journalism.
• Top Up final year 3 of media production (Radio) single-honours BA at University of Sunderland.
• 3rd and final year at University of Brighton/Bournemouth.
SPECIAL FEATURES:
Students have access to the college’s “Digital”, “On Air” and “Production” studios. Students are also offered an opportunity to visit many national, local and community radio stations. In addition, a number of visiting lecturers, broadcasters and members of the communications media deliver lectures on relevant topics.
JUICE FM:
The course operates its own radio station Juice FM 88.7 under licence from the BAI from October to March. It is also available online and via mobile phone apps.
