Description

This course provides students with a broad range of skills in carpentry and joinery. The course includes first and second fixing, temporary work including formwork, shuttering work and shoring, installing built-in furniture/ kitchens and constructing timber frame housing.

All aspects of building construction, services and general building techniques incorporating all current building regulations are explored throughout the course. Learn how to design a house, how to apply for planning permission, draw up plans and do up a bill of quantities for an Eco friendly family home and set out a work schedule.

Students learn how to work as part of the build team, understanding roles and responsibilities with a large emphasis on Health and Safety.

This course is a path to explore the different educational and employment areas in the construction sector.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:

•    Leaving Certificate or equivalent.

•    All applicants are interviewed and places are awarded on suitability.

•    Mature students without formal qualifications are most welcome to apply.

DURATION:

This is a one-year course.

CERTIFICATION:

•    QQI Level 5 in Construction Technology (5M5010).

Learn the skills relevant to all aspects of the building trades and how the building team works. Looking at the different ways structures are built and maintained. With added focus on different materials which can be used.

Students who wish to use the links to further studies will need to attain a certain level of achievement in their QQI award.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

In the college workshop students have access to a large range of woodworking machines, both portable and floor standing. Also gaining on-site experience in a controlled environment.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES:

Career opportunities include apprenticeships in carpentry and joinery, cabinet making and draughtsmanship. Branching into engineering & architecture & construction management. Possible Apprentices in the core building trades.
